Meme-tivism for Feminist Data Literacy
Sinem Görücü
Memes, often characterized by their humorous and viral nature, have become a widespread form of online expression, shaping the way we engage with and understand contemporary issues. “Meme-tivism for Feminist Data Literacy” explores the immense potential of memes as an informative and transformative tool for critical data literacy through an intersectional feminist lens.
Acknowledging the uneven distribution of power, control and knowledge over data, feminist data futures should be seeked through critical and creative literacy methods, mediums, tools and tactics that unpack, communicate and challenge the existing imbalances rather than perpetuating the status quo and the matrix of domination.
The workshop will provide a collaborative space for participants to co-create internet memes for various aspects of feminist data literacy. We will delve into how memes; an online medium that has been predominantly driven by and amplifying the voices of patriarchal norms and communities, can be adopted to challenge the inequalities in access to data literacy.
By embracing the vernacular creativity of meme culture, we will explore the power of memes in sparking critical conversations, raising awareness, mobilizing communities, and advocating for feminist data futures in an accessible and engaging manner while contributing to the feminist data literacy online meme archive as a digital common.
The workshop will consist of a)introduction talk to internet memes culture, the patriarchal patterns in the landscape, and meme genres s b)introduction to memes as mediums for advocacy and activism c)introduction of manual, digital and AI-driven tools and methods for meme creation d)discussion on Meme-tivism for Feminist Data Literacy framework and prompt cards e)a hands-on meme co-creation session with the participants f)discussion and reflections on the contributions to our meme archive.
