I am Jan Christian Schulz, an interdisciplinary researcher and creative technologist who investigates the emergence of ecosystemic relationships through sense and sensor-media. My ongoing research focuses on socio-ecological processes connected to the climate emergency, especially the embodied perception of far distant or complex environmental phenomena.
I conceptualize electronic sensors and environmental monitoring stations as part of the technospheric extensions of our organic bodies, allowing us to perceive our planet's transformations on a greater sensorial spectrum. In this way I combine elements of environmental science, data analysis, art, design, and human-computer interaction to create personal and embodied experiences. Creative computing allows me to appropriate monitoring hardware and use it to unfold collaborative structures among humans, non-humans and their inhabiting environments. By doing so, I deconstruct its conventional application within the context of surveillance and control, and use it instead to create empowering and meaningful connections.
I believe the lively and engaging interactions inspired by creative computing fields do justice to the aliveness of the environment that they represent. Operating on the intersection of social design and science, I include multiple perspectives within my physical and cognitive restoration practices and collaborate with experts from different fields to inspire a collective discourse around ecological issues.
